Samsung Dishwasher Leaving Grit? Start with the Filter
A model-aware cleaning checklist, followed by a simple way to judge whether it helped.
Grit on a plate is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis of a failed pump. Start with an inspection you can document and repeat. This guide covers owner maintenance on Samsung dishwashers; filter designs vary, so use your exact model’s manual for removal and locking instructions.
Before you start
Have a flashlight, soft toothbrush, cloth, and your model number ready. Let the interior cool and disconnect power before reaching into the filter area. Watch for broken glass; do not sweep a hidden opening with your fingers.
Clean only the parts designed to come out
- Check whether the manual identifies a removable filter. Do not force a fixed screen or assume another model’s twist-lock instructions apply.
- For a removable assembly, photograph its position before removal. Rinse the removable pieces and gently brush off debris.
- Inspect accessible spray openings for blockage. Remove and clean spray arms only as your manual permits.
- Reinstall every component and fully engage its lock before running the machine. Incorrect assembly can create new problems.

Make the next cycle a useful test
Photograph one representative dirty dish before and after the cycle. Record the program, detergent, loading arrangement, and where that dish sat in the rack. For a meaningful comparison, keep those choices similar to the previous run. Changing the filter condition, detergent, cycle, and loading together makes it difficult to tell which change helped.
Write down whether the result improved everywhere or only in one rack. Also distinguish loose grit from a smooth white film: describing the actual residue is more useful than reporting that the dishwasher “doesn’t work.” Do not treat improvement after cleaning as proof that every other component is healthy.
If the problem continues
Save the model number, photos, and any error code for the next diagnostic step. Persistent poor cleaning needs a separate assessment of the wash system. Avoid buying a circulation pump, heater, or board solely because cleaning did not fix it. Stop using the machine if it leaks, smells electrically burnt, or trips the breaker.
